Ombudsman front-runner for European post

National ombudsman Alex Brenninkmeijer is the front-runner to become the Dutch member of the European audit office.

Last week it was announced that current member Gijs de Vries, a former junior minister, will not be reappointed after three years in the post.

The 62-year-old Brenninkmeijer is the only candidate and is backed by finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem who said he is perfect for the job.

The European audit office in Luxemburg audits the accounts of European institutions and is composed of one person from each European Union member country.
