15,000 toads to be released into the wild

Amsterdam’s Artis zoo and amphibian research group Ravon are to release 15,000 spadefoot toads into the wild this week, in an effort to strengthen the local toad population.

The spadefoot or garlic toad (Pelobates fuscus) is a threatened species and has been particularly hurt by the fragmentation of the Dutch natural environment.

The toads began life in the zoo as tadpoles and are now ready to be released. A similar project was undertaken last year, releasing toads in Noord-Brabant, Gelderland, Overijssel and Drenthe.
