Rape reports reach 24 a week

There were 1,297 reports of rape made to Dutch police last year, according to the latest AD crime monitor, due to be published on Saturday.

This is the equivalent of 24 a week, but the number of actual rapes is likely to be far higher, the paper says. Earlier research showed as few as one in eight women report rape and sex attacks to the police.

The AD monitor shows police also investigated 1,896 reports of sexual assault and 490 cases of suspected incest. The total number of sex crime reports is down on 2011.

Most sexual assaults took place at home and most victims knew their attackers, the paper says.
