Go Ahead Eagles back in Eredivise after 17 years, Utrecht goes to Europe

Deventer football club Go Ahead Eagles will return to the Dutch premier league next season after a 17-year absence.

Go Ahead Eagles, founded in 1903 as Be Quick, beat FC Volendam 1-0 in the second leg of the play-offs to clinch the final Eredivisie place.

Roda JC, threatened with relegation, managed to cling on to their premier division place in the final minutes of their second leg against Sparta of Rotterdam.

Mark-Jan Fledderus made it 2-1 for the Limburg side after a 0-0 draw in the first leg.

European football

FC Utrecht clinched the final Dutch place in European football next season.

Utrecht beat FC Twente 2-0 in the first match but was 0-2 down by the end of the first half in Sunday’s second leg. Just seconds into the second half, Edouard Duplan made it 1-2.

It is the first time in seven seasons Twente has not qualified for European competition, the AD reported.
