Dutch EU budget top-up could reach €500m, says finance minister

Eradicating the shortfall in the European Union’s new budget will cost the Netherlands at least €350m, finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem is quoted as saying by Nos television.

Dijsselbloem made the comments after a meeting of European finance leaders in Brussels. However, the extra payment could mount up to €500m, the minister said. The budget faces a shortfall of some €11bn over 2013. Ministers have agreed to make extra payments totalling €7.3bn.

The Dutch minister said he did not yet know where the money would come from but that he would make proposals when he presents his spring budget statement later this month.
