Ajax clinches 32nd league title, three in a row for coach Frank de Boer

Amsterdam football club Ajax on Sunday made it three in a row with their 32rd premier league title with a convincing 5-0 win over Willem II.

The Amsterdammers beat the Tilburg side at home, giving them an unbeatable lead of four points with one match still to go. Willem II are bottom of the Eredivisie and will be relegated to the first division next season.

Sunday’s victory, celebrated by tens of thousands of fans outside the Arena stadium outside Amsterdam, is the third for coach Frank de Boer.

Festivities

The players were congratulated by the city’s mayor Eberhard van der Laan. Viktor Fischer was named talent of the year by De Boer while Daley Blind was player of the year.

Several hundred fans also gathered on Amsterdam’s Leidseplein to celebrate. Van der Laan banned the festivities from the city centre because of the pressure on policing. Tonight the Liberation concert on the Amstel takes place in the presence of former queen Beatrix.

By 18.00 hours there had been some 15 arrests.

PSV

Elsewhere, PSV Eindhoven are guaranteed a place in the play-offs for the Champions’ League competition next year after a 4-2 win over NEC of Breda.

Both Feyenoord and Vitesse, who could have challenged PSV for the runner’s up position, lost in the weekend’s football action. Feyenoord lost 0-2 to ADO Den Haag while Vitesse lost 3-2 to RKC Waalwijk.
