FNV heads towards new structure

The FNV trade union federation on Monday announced the new structure which will finally lay to rest the problems of the past few years.

The country’s largest union federation fell apart in 2011 following a leadership battle and disputes over pension reform. An ambitious plan to revamp and rename the organisation, which has 19 member unions, further divided members.

The new structure, which will take effect at the union’s conference on May 14 and 15, will have a new chairman elected by the members, a new management board and a members’ parliament that will wield the greatest power within the organisation.

The unions are currently negotiating with employers’ organisations and the government on a new social contract to pave the way for economic reform.
