British high street institution Marks & Spencer returns to Amsterdam

British department store group Marks & Spencer returns to the Netherlands on Wednesday with a new store in Amsterdam’s Kalverstraat, the Parool reported on Monday.

‘The doors will open at 11.30 precisely,’ a spokesman told the paper. ‘We are expecting long queues.’

News agency Bloomberg quoted a company source as saying the new store will ‘contain a smaller-format food hall and fashion e-boutique, which offers online orders’.

Strategy

Marks & Spencer’s chief executive Marc Bolland, a Dutch national, is due in Amsterdam on Tuesday evening for a press conference where he will outline more about the group’s strategy for the Netherlands.

British high street institution M&S pulled out of the Netherlands some 10 years ago, closing stores in the Kalverstraat and The Hague, when it left the European mainland.

There are unconfirmed reports that M&S is also planning to open a new store in The Hague.
