Belgium likely not to extradite main suspect in Eindhoven beating

It is increasingly unlikely Belgium will extradite the main suspect in the Eindhoven beating, caught on security camera earlier this year, according to various media reports.

The youth is 17 years old and in Belgium can only be tried under juvenile law. This means he cannot be extradited to the Netherlands to possibly face trial under adult law, legal experts say.

The four other Belgian suspects are 18 and can be sent to the Netherlands for trial. A Belgian court is due to rule on the extradition request from the Netherlands on March 26.

Three other suspects, all with Dutch nationality, turned themselves in to police in Eindhoven earlier. They have since been released from custody.

The unprovoked attack by the gang of eight took place on January 4 when a 22-year-old man was hit and kicked, suffering severe concussion and injuries to his face. The attack was caught on security camera and broadcast by a local crime-busting television show.
