Solar power accounts for tiny fraction of Dutch production

Just 0.09% of the electricity used in the Netherlands is generated by solar power, the national statistics office CBS said on Wednesday.

Solar panels in the Netherlands produce some 100 million kilowatt hours of power, while total production is in the region of 100 billion kilowatt hours, the CBS said.

Nearly all (90%) of domestic solar power production derives from private households rather than energy companies.

Despite its tiny share of the domestic market, Dutch solar panel-makers had turnover of over €490m in 2010 and employed 622, the CBS said.

On Tuesday there were warnings in the Netherlands that many solar panels don’t deliver as much energy as they are supposed to. Around 25% of people with solar panels on their roof will not earn their investment back, the AD newspaper reported.
