Fewer unaccompanied children arrive in Holland as refugees

In 2011, 485 youngsters under the age of 18 arrived in the Netherlands and claimed asylum, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS.

The 2011 total is 200 down on the previous year and shows the effect of the government’s get tough approach to child refugees. In 2000, 6,705 juveniles came to the Netherlands without an adult.

Half the youngsters came from Afghanistan and 90% of them were boys.
