Union calls for clear rules on working outside regular hours

Employers and workers must in 2012 work out better guidelines for dealing with work outside office hours, says FNV union chief Ton Heerts.

In an interview with website nu.nl, Heerts said workers should be entitled to extra money or time off if they are expected to work outside their normal hours.
‘It might sound like old-fashioned union talk, but sometimes that is needed,’ Heerts told the website.
Workers should set clearer boundaries to ensure they maintain a good balance between work and private lives. ‘But employers should also be aware where the boundaries lie,’ he said.
This year, the FNV will also pay more attention to the rights of workers on flexible and temporary contracts, Heerts said. Some 300,000 people in the Netherlands currently work on the basis of on-call contracts.
