Football linesman death: court dates set

The seven people arrested in connection with the death of an amateur football linesman at the beginning of December will appear in court over the next two weeks, RTL news reports.

The two youths who were arrested on the day of the attack will appear in front of the judge on January 16. The other four youngsters and a 50-year-old man will be heard on January 23.
The seven face charges of manslaughter, physical abuse and public violence. Richard Nieuwenhuizen was chased and attacked by the youths from Amsterdam club Nieuw Sloten after a match between the Amsterdammers and Almere club Buitenboys. He died of his injuries in hospital the next day.
The lawyer of one of the 16-year-olds told a television talk show on Wednesday evening the linesman may have challenged the youths to hit him. Gert-Iem Roos told the show he wanted the court to order a reconstruction of exactly what happened after the youth team match in Almere.
He has since had over 50 threats by phone, Twitter and email, according to media reports.
