Mystery car in crime tv show appeal belonged to the police

A mystery car spotted near the site of a gangland killing and which the police appealed for information about belonged to the police themselves, website nu.nl reported on Thursday.

Police made a television appeal for information about the black Volkswagen Golf as part of their investigation into the 2011 murder of master criminal Stanley Hillis a week ago.
The website of show Opsporing Verzocht now states: ‘We are not looking for this car any longer’. The show had broadcast an appeal for more information about the vehicle and a drawing of the passenger. The car had been spotted parked in the street four days prior to the murder.
Amsterdam police have now admitted the car was being used by police officers involved in another investigation. ‘This was not known to the officers investigating the Hillis killing,’ a police email to nu.nl stated.
Hillis was killed in the east of Amsterdam in February 2011 while a police surveillance operation was taking place nearby. The murderer escaped in a Volkswagen van.
