Dutch Afghan mission may stop earlier than planned: army chief

Germany’s decision to withdraw troops from the northern Afghan province of Kunduz may lead to the Dutch mission ending in 2013, mission commander Roland de Jong says in Tuesday’s Volkskrant.

‘It is likely the German military camp will close in 2013,’ he said. Dutch soldiers and police, who are training local police officers, live in the same camp.
‘There is then a real chance the Dutch will have to leave as well,’ De Jong is quoted as saying by the paper.

Facilities

German soldiers not only protect the Dutch mission, but are responsible for managing the camp’s facilities.
According to the Volkskrant, Germany is considering withdrawal because of the improved situation in Kunduz.
The Dutch police training mission started in 2011, following the withdrawal of the Dutch military mission. It is due to continue until 2014.
