Tank storage group Odfjell faces legal action over safety rules

Troubled tank storage group Odfjell is to be taken to court for shortcomings in safety standards at its Rotterdam Botlek operations.

The case is due to formally open next Thursday although no evidence will yet be presented, news agency ANP said.
Among the problems identified by inspectors were a shortage of fire-fighting equipment, poor safety procedures, and staff being over-exposed to the chemical benzene. In addition, incidents at the plant were not reported to the proper authorities, ANP said.
Odfjell has been forced to suspend operations in Rotterdam since the end of July for breaking environmental and safety rules. In September, Shell cancelled its contract with the Norwegian company for failing to meet its obligations.
The company has since taken steps to reduce its workforce by 189 jobs.
