Many people are clueless about what their health insurance covers

Many Dutch people have no clue about what their health insurance policy covers and excludes, according to research by comparison website Verzekeringsite.

For example, around 50% of people wrongly think dental care is covered in the basic policy, the site’s director Erik Hordijk told the AD. ‘This is remarkable because the basic policy has never covered dental treatment for adults,’ he said.
Instead, people have to take out additional insurance to cover the cost of a trip to the dentist.
In addition, one in three people think the own-risk charge also applies to a visit to family doctors, which is not the case.
By this weekend everyone should have received a copy of their 2013 health insurance policy ahead of the two month window to switch providers. Research group GfK said earlier that over a quarter of policy holders are looking at ways of cutting their spending on healthcare insurance this year.
