Investigation into high death rate at Spijkenisse hospital

An investigation has opened into the deaths of 15 patients at the Ruwaard van Putten Ziekenhuis in Spijkenisse following what may be mistaken diagnoses by heart specialists.

According to media reports, cardiologists may have failed to take other health problems into account when making their diagnoses and have given morphine to dying patients, which is against guidelines.
Health ministry inspectors closed down the heart unit last week because of the high death toll. The hospital and health ministry officials are now re-examining a number of deaths and hope to publish their findings in six weeks.
