Scrapping student grants will hit poor college students

Plans to scrap basic grants for college and university students will stop people from poorer families going into higher education, the hbo college council says.

It estimates 15,000 fewer students will start an hbo college degree if the new government goes ahead and replaces all grants with loans.
Currently students who live away from home get €266 from the government towards the cost of their studies. Home students get €95.
Last week it emerged that the VVD and Labour, currently in talks on forming a new government, are to stop grants for new students.
