Lots of groups interested in taking over Rabobank cycling team

A number of groups have expressed an interest in taking over sponsorship of the Rabobank cycling team, its director Harold Knebel told Nos television.

‘We have to see what happens next,’ Knebel said. ‘The most important thing is to give structure to the team so we can apply for a licence from world cycling body UCI.’
Last week the Dutch cooperative bank said it would stop sponsoring the professional men’s team because of the fall-out following doping scandals.
Cycle maker Giant is already in talks on possibly becoming the team’s main sponsor, Knebel said. ‘We hope to have clarity as soon as possible.
Criticism
British cyclist David Millar wrote an open letter to the Volkskrant on Saturday urging Rabobank to reconsider its decision to pull out of professional cycling.
‘I can empathise with your disillusionment with the sport, but please do not belittle all the work we’ve done and difference we have made. You are throwing away the chance to be part of the future of what is, in your own words, a beautiful sport,’ Millar wrote.
Millar first reacted to Rabobank’s withdrawal with a tweet on Friday saying the bank itself was part of the problem and the decision is ‘sickening’.
Belgian cyclist Tom Boonen told Belgian television Rabobank’s decision is a massive blow. ‘It is really stupid not to believe things will work out. I was really angry when I heard that. Rabobank is a team bursting with young talent.’
