Justice minister backs senior civil servant over abuse claims

The AIVD security service, justice ministry and police see no reason to carry out a new investigation into allegations of child abuse made against the secretary-general of the justice ministry, minister Ivo Opstelten told MPs on Monday.

A number of witnesses told the AD at the weekend Demmink, 64, met a paedophile pimp in the early 1980s, a claim which Demmink denies.
In addition, Demmink has been accused of raping two young teenage boys, now adults, while visiting Turkey in the 1990s. Last week, the US-Helsinki commission said those claims also need to be investigated.
Demmink retires at the end of this month and is planning legal action against the AD.
Opstelten said earlier investigations into the rumours showed there is no justification for them.
The AIVD, ministry and police also said recent media reports gave no grounds to reopen the investigations.
