Having healthy personnel boosts company profits, report shows

Companies profit from having healthy staff and a 1% reduction in absenteeism across industry would save €2.6bn in costs, according to research by CapGemini for the social affairs ministry.

The savings amount to some €400 per worker per year. In addition, healthy workers are more productive, which will also benefit the economy to the tune of €6bn a year, the research, quoted by RTL news, shows.
The findings, which include research into the experiences of 100 companies, have been compiled into a manifesto which caretaker social affairs minister Paul de Krom has sent to parliament.
Physiotherapy
For example, one Brabant home nursing group cut absenteeism by 5% by cutting the size of its teams, so people felt more involved in their job. A consultation hour with a physiotherapist reduced absenteeism at a cleaning company from 12% to 4.5%.
Last week it emerged shipbuilding company IHC Merwede plans to fine workers who smoke outside official breaks.
In addition, demographics will force firms to take better care of their staff as the population becomes older and the pension age rises, the social affairs ministry said.
