Cabinet negotiator positive about new coalition talks so far

One of the team helping put together a new coalition government following last month’s general election is ‘positive’ about the way the talks are progressing, Nos television reported on Friday.

Until now the talks have not run into any real difficulties, Henk Kamp said. ‘We are trying to reach a good end result by working in a constructive way,’ he said. ‘It is a stable and gradual process.’

The talks between the right-wing VVD and the Labour party have been going on for two weeks. The two parties have already agreed how to amend the 2013 spending plans drawn up by the outgoing administration.

Tax

Meanwhile, the Financieele Dagblad says the next government will not get as much in tax income next year as it expects.

The paper quotes tax experts who say there is a very real chance tax receipts will be €2bn lower than forecast.

Economist Flip de Kam told the paper the forecasts are based on over-optimistic expectations about the growth in income tax. Over the past few years, income has not risen as fast as economic growth, De Kam points out.
