Election: Labour voters like purple, D66 says no to the Socialists

Labour voters would have no objection to their party joining forces with the two Liberal parties – the VVD and D66 – to form a new coalition cabinet after the September 12 general election, according to an Ipsos Synovate poll.

While the Socialists, D66 and left-wing greens GroenLinks are Labour voters’ favourite coalition partners, 26% have no objection to joining forces with the right-wing Liberal VVD, the Synovate poll shows.
VVD voters say the Christian Democrats are their favourite coalition partner, followed by D66. Only 11% would be happy if the VVD was in a coalition with GroenLinks.
The rise in support for the Labour party has made a purple coalition a more likely option. A purple cabinet – so called because of the mix of party colours – ran the Netherlands from 1994 to 2002.
Pechtold
Meanwhile, D66 leader Alexander Pechtold told business television station RTLZ the chance of his party being in the same coalition as the SP is ‘virtually zero’.
Both the SP and Labour have standpoints which D66 does not agree with and want to take too long to get government finances in order, Pechtold said.
He reiterated earlier statements that he would prefer to see a stable centre cabinet without ‘left or right-wing experiments’.
