Annual index shows slightly more women in Dutch boardrooms

Saturday 08 September 2012

The number of women in Dutch company boardrooms is increasing slowly with women now accounting for 10.4% of top jobs, according to the annual Female Board Index published by Nyenrode University.

In 2011, 9.1% of management and supervisory board members were female.

However, the increase this year is entirely due to supervisory board appointments, the index compilers say. Women accounted for 14 out of 60 supervisory appointments so far this year. Eight of them came from outside the Netherlands.

Express delivery firm TNT is the only one to meet the target of 30% women in the most senior corporate positions.

Because only 18% of women work more than 35 hours a week in the Netherlands.

It takes a long, dedicated progression in a person's career to acheive a top position. I can only think that the majority of primary caregivers here is women. No matter how dedicated you are to your profession your child will always come first and therein lies the rub. Take time off to have, and raise children and your career suffers. Yet, it is easier here to have personal time than in some countries (like the USA) so maybe a change in attitude and some empathy will raise that "glass ceiling."

I know two girls who during their job interviews were asked if they were planning to start families in the near future. I'm no HR expert, but I think answering yes might cause them the job? Asking such questions are not allowed in the US (also hasn't occurred yet in my circle). This has to filter out a few potential female leaders in the Netherlands I think...

Kaccie Li - those questions are not allowed in NL either, and yet, I do believe they get asked.
