VU teaching hospital chairman quits, independent probe to be held

Outside experts are to be asked to look into recent events at the VU university teaching hospital in Amsterdam after claims that patient safety is at risk because of a dispute between specialists.

The chairman of the supervisory board, former minister Cees Veerman, told the NRC on Saturday he wanted outside experts to assess the situation, including the functioning of the supervisory board itself.
Two members of the hospital management board, including its chairman, resigned on Friday following the suspension of a senior surgeon who went public with fears about the safety of patients. Another senior surgeon is home on sick leave, news agency ANP said at the weekend.
On Tuesday, health ministry inspectors put the hospital under special supervision and the hospital authorities themselves decided to suspend all lung operations until the situation has been resolved.
