Five arrested for smuggling 2,100 kilos of cocaine in cacoa beans

Five men have been arrested in connection with the smuggling of at least 2,100 kilos of cocaine from Ecuador to the Netherlands, news agency ANP reports.

The drug was found hidden in an consignment of cacoa beans in Antwerp port at the weekend and allowed to continue by the Belgian authorities. The shipment, in four separate containers, was allowed to continue to its final destination – an industrial estate in Emmeloord, north east of Amsterdam.
The cocaine, said to have a street value of more than €100m by the Telegraaf, was hidden in some 2,000 packages and distributed in jute sacks in four containers.
Four of the men come from Amsterdam, the fifth from Luttelgeest. Two of the men tried to escape by leaping into a ditch at the back of the building but were caught by a police dog.
