Violence against the police is getting nastier, says police chief

There were 405 registered incidents of violence against the police in the past three months, including 40 attempts to run over police officers, according to media reports at the weekend.

In total, 62 police officers were injured after being attacked. In one case, a suspect attempted to push a policeman off a balcony, in another an officer was shot at by his own gun, website nu.nl reported, quoting police figures.
Six police officers suffered broken bones in the attacks and one had ‘life-threatening injuries’, nu.nl said.

IJsselland police chief Arend Kloosterman told Nos television the violence used against the police has intensified, but the number of attacks has not increased from between 1,100 and 1,300 a year.
Various programmes have been developed to try to reduce aggression and police officers are given better training to cope with violence, Kloosterman said.
Most incidents took place at the weekend and the suspects had been using alcohol or drugs.
