‘Home copy charge should be extended to phones, tablets’

The organisation which collects home copy fees paid on blank CDs and DVDs wants to expand the levy to smartphones, tablets, personal computers and memory chips, sources have told website Webworld.

The De Thuiskopie foundation says this will raise an extra €60m for copyright holders in 2013, the website claims.
Hardware makers say the foundation has exaggerated the financial consequences and have now commissioned consultants group PWC to research the potential damage to copyright holders.
The foundation has long campaigned to have the home copy levy extended to mp3 players and hard discs.
Discussions between the foundation and ministers will continue next week and junior justice minister Fred Teeven is expected to announce his decision in the autumn.
