PostNL to create 1,200 jobs for handicapped, long-term jobless

Dutch postal group PostNL plans to create 1,200 jobs for people on welfare benefits or employed through sheltered work schemes for the handicapped, the company said on Saturday.

By 2014 ‘some 550 people from sheltered work schemes and almost 650 people claiming welfare will be working on sorting machines in one of the eighteen sorting and distribution centres of the parcel division,’ the company said in a statement.
A pilot project is currently under way in Utrecht and has proved extremely successful, the company said.
PostNL has been at the centre of protests this year after it emerged the board had been given hefty bonuses and pay rises, despite a reorganisation which is costing thousands of workers their jobs. In addition, PostNL has refused to top up shortfalls in the company pension scheme.
