Jobless total unchanged in May, fewer benefit claims

The Dutch unemployment rate remained stable at 489,000, or 6.2% of the working population in May, despite forecasts of a steady rise, prompted by the economic crisis.

The jobless total rose in March and April to a six-year high, the national statistics office CBS said.
At the same time, the number of people claiming unemployment benefit (ww) fell slightly to 291,000. The drop was largely due to seasonal factors as more farm and construction workers found jobs.
In March, the government’s macro-economic forecasting agency said the jobless total would rise to over 500,000 in the coming years.
