Government crack-down on social benefit fraud pays off

Government officials tracked down fraudulent social security claims totalling €86m last year, a 30% increase on 2010, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.

The figures are due to be presented to parliament by social affairs minister Henk Kamp later in the morning.
Fraud involving unemployment benefit (ww) was up €14m to €64m, while there was a 25% increase in the value of fraudulent pensions, child benefit and widows’ benefit claims.
The increase is due to extra efforts from the government to crack down on benefit fraud. Kamp will also introduce plans to increase the ‘ridiculously low’ penalties for benefit fraud, which he hopes to get through parliament before the summer recess, the paper said.
