BMW confirms plans to build cars at Nedcar plant

German car giant BMW has signed a statement of intent to build cars at the Nedcar plant in Born, Limburg. Nedcar is faced with closure following the decision of Mitsubishi to pull out.

BMW’s role is crucial in maintaining the 1,500 jobs at the plant, which make it a major local employer. Industrial group VDL from Eindhoven said earlier it would take over the plant but only if a major client is found. BMW has been a rumoured participant for several weeks.
A complete takeover of Nedcar is near ‘but we are not there yet,’ economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen said in a reaction.
A spokesman for Nedcar told news agency ANP that talks are also continuing with other car makers. Mitsubishi is to stop producing the Colt in the Netherlands at the end of this year.
