Airline KLM to freeze salaries in hunt for €700m in savings

Airline KLM plans to freeze staff salaries for the next year at least as part of plans to cut costs by €700m, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Thursday.

The paper bases its claims on proposals made by management to the airline unions. Parent group Air France-KLM posted a loss of €1bn last year, largely due to rising fuel costs.
The paper says unions accept that action has to be taken although cabin staff are ‘shocked’ at the proposals. The FNV union says it fears ground crew will have to cope with the brunt of the cuts.
Holidays
In addition to the salary freeze, the company wants to cut holiday allowances and reduce waiting times for crew on transatlantic flights.
In January, Air France-KLM announced a major recovery plan involving reducing investment by €1bn and generating €1bn through freezing wages and recruitment.
However, at the time it was said wages at KLM would be ‘moderated’ not frozen.
