New and surprising names on Oranje selection for European Cup

The provisional Dutch squad for next month’s European championships includes a number of surprising and new names, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.

Eighteen of the 36 men called up play for foreign clubs and eight are first-timers. ‘We’ve tried to come up with the most balanced group possible,’ coach Bert van Marwijk told the paper.
‘In this phase of the preparations we still have to cope with the Dutch play-offs, foreign competitions, cup finals and the final of the Champions League. Other players are returning from injury,’ he said. ‘This is partly why I have included a number of talented players we have been following for some time.’
The squad’s first training camp takes place on May 14 and 15 in Hoenderloo, near the Veluwe national park. The current group of 36 will then be reduced to 27. Another seven will be dropped before the final squad of 20 plus three keepers heads for the Ukraine.
Oranje‘s Group B competitors are Germany, Denmark and Portugal.
