Vodafone clients demand answers over network problems

Big companies which use telecoms company Vodafone have been ‘severely affected’ by network problems caused by a fire at company offices in Rotterdam, Nos television reports.


‘You would expect Vodafone to have a back-up system,’ Richard den Uyl, of major telecom user’s group BTG, is quoted as saying. Some members are considering submitting a damages claim to the company, Den Uyl told Nos.
As well as millions of private customers, a number of shops have also reported problems with direct debit payments. Many government departments were also difficult to reach.
Nationwide
Vodafone said it expected it would take most of the day before services are back to normal. Rotterdam, The Hague and Kennermerland district are most seriously affected but there is disruption nationwide, website nu.nl said.
The breakdown followed a fire in a Vodafone office complex which led to all power in the network centre being shut down as a precautionary measure.
Vodafone has five major transmission bases in the Netherlands and the loss of the Rotterdam operation meant the other four had to pick up the extra traffic.
The company said in a statement on its website it sincerely regrets the problems for subscribers and is working ‘flat out’ to end the disruption.
