Students warned about masters degree quality

The quality of masters degrees at the Netherlands’ universities and colleges varies enormously, especially in the liberal arts, according to independent higher education advice centre CHOI.

In particular law, management studies, communication studies and arts and culture show wide variations in standards, the organisation says.
Some courses do not aim high enough and there is too little contact between professors and students. In addition, many courses don’t do enough to prepare students for the jobs market, which is crucial for sectors in which vacancies are scarce.
The CHOI urges students to look at other universities when deciding which masters degree to take. At the moment, 80% of students remain in the same institution where they took their bachelors degree.
Dutch colleges and universities currently offer some 750 masters programmes, according to the CHOI’s new guide.
