Police cars fitted with a black box

Police cars are to be fitted with black boxes in the hope officers will drive better and cause fewer accidents.

In 2010, the number of accidents involving police cars rose to 9,630. Around 20% of these were serious, with three police officers and 42 civilians injured and three police deaths, says the Volkskrant.
The black box will show the speed being driven and whether sirens and flashing lights were in use. Police chiefs say drivers are more aware of how they are driving when these warnings are turned on.
Three regions, including Rotterdam, have been fitted with black boxes and the expectation is that all 13,000 police vehicles will carry them by 2016.
