More people will accept an organ than are prepared to donate

Just over half the Dutch are prepared to donate their organs after death but 63% are prepared to accept someone else’s organ should they need it, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS.

Religious people are on the whole less willing to donate organs. Muslims are the least keen – just 23% say they are prepared for their organs to be used after death, the CBS research shows.
Younger people are more accepting of organ donation than older people.
At the moment, 3.1 million people are on the organ donation register. Nevertheless, the waiting list for a kidney is now over four years and for other organs around one year.
