Teachers strike over budget cuts

Around 2,000 schools around the country are closed on Tuesday due to industrial action by teachers who are protesting at cuts to the education budget.

The striking teachers will hold a mass meeting in the Amsterdam Arena later today and have sent an open letter in the Volkskrant to MPs to take a critical look at education minister Marja van Bijsterveldt”s plans.
They are particularly angry about her plan to cut €300m from the €3.7bn budget for special needs education.
The letter is also signed by teaching unions and parents.
Teachers are also cross that the minister intends to increase their working hours and freeze their salaries.
