Researchers discover two new Van Gogh paintings

Researchers have attributed a still-life of flowers to Vincent van Gogh that ten years ago they said was not by him, Nos new reported on Monday evening.

Van Gogh made the painting, Still-life with Meadow Flowers and Roses, in Paris while he was living with his brother. Works from this period are difficult to attribute because he did not describe them in letters to his brother.
In 2003 it was decided the painting was not by Van Gogh but by an unknown artist.
Now new techniques developed at the TU Delft and Antwerp university have shown a second painting underneath the first. This one depicts two wrestlers which Van Gogh did describe in a letter to his brother. The letter is in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
Researchers told Nos news that the wrestlers are unmistakably the work of Van Gogh because of the technique and colours.
‘This is an extraordinary discovery,’ professor Joris Dik of the TU Delft told the Nos. ‘When it came to light, I had the feeling I was looking over Van Gogh’s shoulder.’
Still-life with Meadow Flowers and Roses hangs in the Kröller-Müller museum in Otterloo.
