Life insurance pushes Achmea into the red

Insurance giant Achmea booked a net loss of €208m last year, compared with net profit of €1.2bn in 2010. Revenue fell by 8% to €23.2bn, the group said in a statement.

Achmea said the loss is due to its life insurance activities, which had to deal with a large number of claims last year and was hard hit by the turmoil on the financial markets.
The company did post a profit on its health insurance activities. Achmea is Dutch market leader and counts Zilveren Kruis and De Friesland among its brands.
