Liberal MPs call for ban on restraints for patients with dementia

MPs from the VVD Liberal party are calling for changes in the use of restraints on elderly patients with dementia, saying their use should be limited as much as possible, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.

Draft new regulations on restraints, which are supported by the junior health minister Marlies Veldhuijzen van Zanten, are too flexible, the MPs say.
‘If the minister does not take action, elderly dementia patients will be tied up at home,’ MP Tamara Venrooy told the paper.
Veldhuijzen van Zanten has already amended her plans following criticism from MPs. Care home will only be able to use restraints on a temporary basis and will first have to discuss the issues with experts in other care methods which do not involve tying patients to chairs or their beds.
However, MPs say, the new rules will still allow restraints to be used at private homes and that raises serious safety issues.
