Home owners lobby wants easier mortgages for contract workers

Banks should make it easier for people on short-term or flexible employment contracts to get a mortgage, according to home owners’ lobby group VEH in Monday’s AD.

The organisation says banks should look at work security rather than job security when assessing mortgage applications.
Currently it is hard to get a mortgage without a permanent job but employment patterns are shifting and more people now have short-term contracts. Figures last week showed just 2,000 people got a permanent job contract last year.
‘The labour market is changing fundamentally. Employers want more flexible workers and to make it easier to sack staff. At the same time, workers are changing their jobs more often or becoming freelancers,’ VEH director Rob Mulder told the paper.
The paper says MPs from the two ruling parties – the VVD Liberals and Christian Democrats – support the call for more flexibility in mortgages.
