The decision by Hero Brinkman to leave the anti-immigration PVV and stay in parliament as an independent has hurt the PVV in the latest Ipsos Synovate opinion poll.
The poll puts the PVV on 21 seats, two down on its total two weeks ago and three below its general election total.
By contrast, the appointment of Diederick Samsom as new Labour leader has boosted the PvdA‘s fortunes by three seats. Labour has now overtaken the PVV and would take 26 of the 150 seats in parliament if there was a general election tomorrow. This is still four below its general election total.
The SP also has 26 seats in the latest Synovate poll, while the VVD Liberals are on 34, three up on June 2010.
Meanwhile, research by TNS Nipo shows Samsom could become a real threat to prime minister Mark Rutte. The research gives Samsom a score of 6.5 out of 10, just above the prime minister’s 6.4.
In particular, Samsom is popular with supporters of the D66 Liberal democrats and left-wing green party GroenLinks, TNS Nipo says.
