World Press Photo winner ‘represents the Arab Spring’

Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda has won this year’s main World Press Photo award for his picture of a woman swathed in black, holding a member of her family who had been injured during protests in Yemen.

The photograph was taken in a mosque that was transformed into a field hospital to deal with the injured. The World Press Photo is a Dutch competition.
The photograph speaks for the entire region, the jury said. ‘It represents Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Syria and everything which is taking place in the Arabic Spring,’ the jury says. ‘But it also shows the intimate side of what has happened.’
In total, the jury awarded prizes in nine categories to 57 photographers from 24 countries.
