Reduced rail services to continue until weather stabilises

Dutch Rail will continue to operate reduced services for the foreseeable future in an effort to avoid any more weather-created problems, passenger service company NS and rail operator ProRail said on Friday.

Services have been disrupted since last Friday’s snow, which led to thousands of travellers being stranded because the infrastructure did not function properly and passengers were not kept informed about what was going on.
Uncertain weather prospects for the next few days make a continuation of the emergency timetable necessary. If fewer intercity and sprinter trains are in use, it is easier to solve any problems, the rail firms say.
Overcrowding
The reduction in services means passengers will face more overcrowded trains and longer waits between journeys. Travellers are urged to check the NS website for updates.
Transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen told MPs on Thursday the NS should take action to combat the effects of wintry weather as soon as weather forecasters say the snow is on its way.
The minister is also looking at the cost of using points to switch tracks which are less vulnerable to frost and at the experience of other countries.
She has also said NS and ProRail bosses should forego any bonuses they are entitled to this year because of the problems.
