ING gets green light to sell US internet savings bank

Financial services company ING has been given the green light to sell its US internet savings bank ING Direct USA by the US authorities.


Capital One Financial is paying $9bn for ING Direct. The sale was ordered by Brussels as compensation for the government’s bail-out of ING during the 2008 financial crisis.
American consumer groups had been critical of the deal, saying it is risky and complicated, and could be a threat to the financial system.
