Carnaval celebrations pass off peacefully

Tens of thousands of people celebrated Carnaval (carnival) in the Netherlands this weekend, in the run up to the start of Lent.

The Dutch carnival festivities – complete with lavishly decorated floats, oompah-oompah music and lots of beer – are traditionally a festivity for the Catholic south but the party is slowly spreading northwards.
According to the Telegraaf on Monday, just a handful of people were hospitalised – mostly due to a combination of alcohol and falling over. No-one under the age of 15 was taken to hospital with alcohol poisoning, the paper said.
