Twenty one people lost an eye due to New Year fireworks

Twenty one people became blind in one eye because of firework accidents during the New Year celebrations, the Dutch eye doctors’ association NOG said on Monday.

In total, 207 people were treated for eye injuries, down from last year’s festivities. However, the extent of the injuries was more serious, a spokesman told news agency ANP.
Of those treated, 102 were lighting fireworks and the rest were bystanders. The organisation has been calling for a ban on explosive fireworks since 2009.
